A Home Away from Home: How BCD Helped Alec Find Confidence, Independence, and Joy
Alec’s story
When Alec first came to BCD for short-term accommodation respite, it was just meant to be a chance for him and his family to take a break. But what he found was much more than just a place to stay. BCD became his second home, a safe space where he could grow, explore new experiences, and build the confidence to step beyond the comfort of his familiar surroundings.
Alec’s story
Leaving home was not always easy for Alec. The outside world felt overwhelming, and the security of his daily routines at home often made it hard for him to embrace change.
His family hoped that through BCD’s respite services, he could gain the skills and confidence to enjoy time away from home while still feeling supported. What they didn’t anticipate was just how much he would thrive.
During his stays at BCD’s respite home, Alec forged deep connections with his care worker team who encouraged his engagement in familiar activities such as swimming, bowling, and dancing.
Each interaction bolstered his independence and social confidence. One of his proudest achievements was participating in the can and bottle Return and Earn collection. It gave him a sense of responsibility and organisation, reinforcing the idea that his contributions mattered.
With each visit, Alec grew more comfortable and eager to engage with others. He formed friendships, laughed more, and found joy in social interactions that once felt intimidating.
His stays were not just about respite for his family but about empowerment for him, proving to himself and those around him that he was capable of so much more than he had believed.
His mother, Skye, has been his unwavering source of support throughout this journey. As she prepares to relocate with the family to Nowra, she reflects on the incredible transformation she has witnessed in her son.
"Sad to leave, but really happy with the way BCD provided support, services, and communicated openly," she shares.
The changes in Alec have not only impacted him but have brought a sense of hope and relief to the entire family.
Alec’s time with BCD may be coming to an end, but the foundation he has built here will carry him into the next chapter of his journey. The experiences, friendships, and confidence he gained will serve as stepping stones as he continues to work toward his goals in his new home.
His story is a powerful reminder of how essential NDIS supports like respite, short-term accommodation, and supported independent living are.
These services go beyond just providing a place to stay, they create opportunities for growth, independence, and connection. For Alec, BCD was not just a temporary stop, it was a turning point, a place where he discovered his potential and prepared to take on the world with newfound confidence.
